Filler worth keeping

Three filler arcs earn a place even on a run that skips the rest.

  • Twelve Guardian Ninja arc, Shippuden episodes 57–71: An anime-only mission that fills in Asuma's past with the Twelve Guardian Ninja. ANN's DVD review called it "one stretch of filler you might want to consider digging into."AFL, Wikipedia, ANN
  • Kakashi's ANBU arc, Shippuden episodes 349–361: A flashback to Kakashi's years in the ANBU Black Ops that leads up to the bell test from the start of the original series.AFL, Wikipedia
  • Kurosuki Family Removal Mission, Naruto episodes 152–157: The standout of the original series' long filler run; ANN named it an arc you shouldn't skip for "balancing action and comedy with a little bit of drama."AFL, ANN

The famous "skip from 136" block in the first series is 82 filler episodes plus three mixed ones (141, 142 and 220). Watch episode 220: it ends with Naruto leaving to train with Jiraiya, which leads straight into Shippuden Anime Filler List, Wikipedia.

Boruto is a special case. Anime Filler List counts only 28 Boruto episodes as filler but labels another 179 as "anime canon": original stories that don't come from the manga. Crunchyroll's arc guide marks many of those as filler too, so if you want the manga story only, expect to skip much more of Boruto Anime Filler List, Crunchyroll arc guide.
