Release order or story order?

The two orders differ in one place. Progressive is Reki Kawahara's own retelling of Aincrad from the first floor up, and the films tell it from Asuna's side official site. Aria of a Starless Night covers the same stretch as Season 1's first two episodes, from just before the game launches to the first-floor boss fight ANN. Scherzo of Deep Night picks up a little under a month later ANN. Everything else runs in the same order whichever line you follow.

When to watch the Progressive films

Watch them after Season 1 at the earliest. Anime News Network's review of Aria points out that "the vast majority of viewers of this film will have seen the original", and says Asuna's viewpoint puts familiar scenes in a new light ANN. The films came out after War of Underworld, so release order puts them last, while watching them right after Season 1 keeps you in Aincrad.

For strict story order on a rewatch, both films fit between Season 1's episodes 2 and 3. The official US chronology dates episode 2's first-floor boss fight to December 3, 2022, and episode 3 opens in April 2023 official chronology. Aria ends with that same boss fight, and Scherzo picks up less than a month later, mostly on the fifth floor ANN, Wikipedia. Both films are optional. ANN calls Scherzo "worth a watch if you're invested in the characters" ANN.
